Domain acquisition
Knowing when to buy a domain defensively versus when to monitor and enforce is crucial for budget optimization.
The Defensive Registration Trap
Many companies waste millions registering every conceivable typo of their brand across hundreds of TLDs. This strategy is futile; attackers will simply move to permutations you haven't bought. You cannot own the entire keyboard.
Strategic Acquisition
We recommend defensive acquisition only for core brand assets:
- The exact brand name across the top 10 major gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .co, .io).
- Exact brand names in major ccTLDs where you do business (e.g., .co.uk, .de, .fr).
- High-risk 'combo' domains explicitly linked to sensitive functions (e.g., [brand]login.com or [brand]support.com).
Everything else should fall under continuous monitoring and reactive enforcement.
